Airports, Biometrics and Travel - HD Video Interview
with Sumesh Patel, SITA President APAC
(16 August 2022, 17:04 +07)
To say a lot has changed since
Travel News Asia last interviewed Sumesh Patel, SITA's President
for Asia Pacific,
in July 2020, would be an enormous
understatement.
Little did we know then just how much anxiety,
death, devastation and sorrow COVID19 would cause around the
world, and continues to do so.
As borders gradually start to reopen and travel
restrictions ease, people are once again able to fly without as
many hurdles as were introduced during the past two years.
Whether travelling for business, returning home,
visiting friends and family, or jetting off for a holiday
somewhere, the less touchpoints we encounter on that journey, the
better.
Incredible computer speeds and the enormous
amounts of affordable storage that is now available along with all
the advances in machine learning and AI allow companies such as
SITA to push the boundaries well beyond what we even thought possible
just two years ago.
To find out how SITA (Société Internationale de
Télécommunications Aéronautiques) is doing that, Steven Howard of
Travel News Asia interviewed Sumesh Patel on 12 August over a Zoom
call.
In this exclusive interview, Sumesh tells us how
the technology that airports use is changing, what passengers can
expect today and in the future, and what hurdles need to be
overcome.
We discuss Thailand's plans to enhance the travel
experience at a number of airports in the country and you will
learn what Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) near Bangkok
has planned for September.
We also discuss how SITA is handling the increase
in competition, how the company manages privacy of the data its
systems handle, whether at home check-in and ID check is a
reality, and when Sumesh believes we might be able to login for a
flight, reserve the airport train and check-in to our hotel all at
the same time and experience an absolutely seamless journey from
departure to arrival.
Steven also asks whether airports really want
departing travellers to be at the airport for less time, rather
than spending money in the shops, bars and restaurants, and we
talk about whether it is easier for an airport to trial something
such as SITA SmartPath on departing passengers rather than
arrivals. All that and much, much more in the HD video
and podcast below.
